A child in 3rd or 4th grade is becoming more independent, which includes their desire to express themselves in English.
However, they can still be apprehensive about making mistakes.
And the immediate pressure of 15-20 of their peers in a classroom, with the added time constraint, can sometimes hinder a child’s self-belief and confidence.
They can often feel rushed which can sometimes be the cause of more mistakes.
This can add to their apprehension, which inhibits learning.
Letting your child have time & space to develop their English speaking is vital.
They Want To Express Themselves
Rather than only repeating words or simple phrases, your child wants to actually describe more of what they see, think & feel in English.
Of course, it’s still important for your child to mimick a native speaker, which includes lots of repetition.
But building on phrases they have learned to express their individuality becomes an exciting new game.
They Still Need Privacy To Learn
It’s a critical stage as they become more self-aware, including how they sound to people around them.
If your child feels comfortable possibly sounding a bit silly as they begin to learn & practice new words – and if they understand that making mistakes is a necessary part of the process – then progress can be rapid.
1-on-1 time with a patient native teacher is invaluable.
The Best Time To Learn English
Training English speaking skills can be fun, like a game, when the fear of making a mistake isn’t forefront in your child’s mind.
And if your child learns English before puberty, it will stay with them for life.
Of course, it’s not black & white. There are degrees.
- Some try to learn but take lessons in a stressed environment and get overwhelmed with fear, frustration or boredom; and, on the other hand,
- Some people learn later in life, beautifully.
You have the chance to give your child freedom to learn in an unpressured, unhurried way at a critical point in their learning curve.
The more their English speaking skills develop now, the more natural their interactions in English will be during high school, university and work.
