A child in middle school or high school is in one of 3 broad groups when it comes to speaking English:
- They haven’t really started;
- They’ve had many lessons but struggled; or
- They already speak & understand quite a bit.
Whatever English level or age your teenage child is, now is the best time to let them have 1-on-1 speaking practice with an experienced native teacher.
Teens Who Are Starting “Late”
Perceptions of “late” are misleading, especially to do with early childhood education. Children, given the right circumstances, can “catch up” in no time.
This is because emotionally ready students are much more receptive, with less resistance. They are able to stay open to the process more easily.
Starting with fresh eyes, or “late,” can be an advantage.
Teens Who May Have Struggled
Learning a language should be fun and exciting! If it hasn’t been fun for a child, it’s rarely their fault.
Whatever the reason why a child might not have gained confidence with English, it’s never too late to change their perspective & development.
If a student is bored, frustrated, or afraid, they just need someone patient who can help them engage.
Teens With A Solid Foundation
Your child might have been learning English for many years. They have knowledge & experience.
This is an exciting time because they can delve deeper into the language and “fill in the blanks” with a lot of material they covered in elementary school.
With this, they are able to capitalize on any & every chance to speak English, approaching fluency.
Teens Can Learn A Foreign Language Quickly
The difference between a 15 and 18 year-old can be quite stark.
When I was 18 I lived in Brazil for 12 months on a Rotary Youth Exchange program. I went to school there and learned Portuguese. I was conversing after 3 months and, by the end of the year, dreaming & thinking in the local language.
It was the first time I’d tried to learn a foreign language. I was quite proud.
However, some younger friends from other countries who were participating in the same youth exchange program spoke much more fluently than me:
- A 15 year-old American boy couldn’t convince some girls we met once that he wasn’t Brazilian!
- Another 16 year-old Turkish girl spoke almost as well as him in a relaxed & natural way.
The point is that every year counts.
If you can help your teen have more exposure to 1-on-1 English conversation practice, their English speaking will develop more naturally at a faster pace…
…and it will last a lifetime.
